Often, students begin piano lessons because they wish to acquire a skill. They want to learn to play the piano, so they find someone who can play, and they sign up for lessons. But piano lessons can do much more than simply teach you to play the piano.
Literacy can be defined as the quality or state of being literate, especially the ability to read and write, and it can also refer to a person's knowledge of a particular subject or field.1 We generally think of this in terms of language, the ability to read and write our language, as well as familiarity with well-known authors and great works of literature. This same terminology can be applied to music. As students learn to play an instrument, they should be simultaneously learning to read musical notation and to write musical notation. In addition, they should be exposed to a variety of styles, composers, and musical compositions. In doing this, over time, as the student's knowledge increases, the student becomes musically literate. As he becomes more musically literate, he has a greater capacity to learn new music, and his appreciation for music increases, opening the door to greater opportunities in music. 1 http://www.dictionary.com/browse/literacy?s=t
